Pusheen + eggs (and tinykittenteeth.com) = love

Pusheen, that adorably tubby gray tabby Internet sensation of a cat, has been recreated by Becky and Frank of  TinyKittenTeeth.com.  I love it.

  1. Anyhow, for your egg blog; a twin egg story.

So, a while back, I was living and teaching overseas. One of my coworkers, Ang, had a thing for twin eggs.

It should be mentioned at this moment that twin eggs, which are eggs with more than one yolk (as simple and as strange as you imagine them) are a fairly common thing to find if you've got chickens. They never make it into American grocery stores however, probably due to the consumer wishing a product that is absolutely homogeneous and one that does not make them think about the plight of the chick during breakfast.

Anyhow, Ang had a thing for twin eggs because she, as a ethnic Chinese woman, considered them auspicious.

Getting hold of these eggs ended up being as easy as having a friend which a chicken farm. Since eggs are run through various machines that check their size and shape and sort them, in order to sort them for grocery stores, the eggs that have a longer, less spherical shape, are rejected during the sorting. These are the ones most likely to be twins.

Given the scale of the operation, she would receive cartons upon cartons of them from her friend. When she gave me a bag...I was a bit confused, but there was nothing to be done save make six yolk omelettes with three eggs.

In America, I assume these eggs are split into a distribution channel for baked goods. It's difficult to imagine someone throwing them away, but as most of us have never heard of them, it does bring up some questions.

Where are our American twin eggs?
